Amateur Recommendation Hour: Sixty Eight Twenty Two
Today’s recommendation is the sophomore effort of one of my favorite Korean bands.
Sixty-Eight, Twenty-Two by ...Whatever That Means is a thematically more condensed, unified, and I would argue more personal of an effort from the band that introduced me to the Korean punk scene. Pondering the sustainability of the genre in Korea and specifically their future as a band as a result.
My personal interpretation of this work is that it conveys the feelings and emotions of the punk scene in regards to how punk rock and those who play it or enjoy it are viewed as lesser than those who live a glamorous, sophisticated, and metropolitan lifestyle in a city such as Seoul. It is even somewhat reflected in the album artwork with the farmland in the foreground, manual laborers cast aside and looked down upon by the city skyline in the background.
A huge thank you to Jeff Moses and Jeong Ah ‘Trash’ Yang for all of their efforts to keep this genre alive
