Mafia III: The Wrong Medium
Today’s recommendation* is another one of those pesky asterisks oh dear they ruin all of the fun don’t they?
Mafia III is a heartbreaking game. It could have been lauded as one of the highlights of the generation. It has top notch writing, believably flawed, layered and morally complex characters, OUTSTANDING performances, and offers a very interesting and tactful analysis of post-Vietnam War America in the Deep South and (my own interpretation of this work) about the relative and flexible nature of power and how it is utilized by those who have it.
For all of those highs there are some absolutely perplexing lows. Its gameplay loop is uninspired, hollow and boring repetition, it is packed to the brim with technical issues and immersion breaking (but at least humorous) glitches, and extremely stupid AI. It is an endurance to have to play through at times.
The way I have always described it is “a great television series stuck in a bad game” and I won’t be stopping any time soon. This work is not conveyed well through this particular medium, but I believe it would be excellent adapted through another and in the right hands.

There is fortunately a way for you to experience this game through a 2 hours 48 minutes long “movie cut” on YouTube should you not want to or not have the means to actually play it. In fact for those of you not willing to spend the time and money playing through a far too often slog of a game this would be the optimal way to experience it.
